Of Gurnah and Resilience: My Op-ed on the 2021 Nobel Laureate in Literature

By Adamu Danjuma

'I speak in the voice of gentle rain
In whispers of growth
In sleight of light
I speak of light
I speak of aged hairs of wind
Midwife to cloud
And sheaves on threshing-floor'

Dear Reader: A Message To Whom It May Concern

I don’t know what you are thinking or doing currently. But, you know what? It doesn’t have to be perfect all the time. Even if you aim for perfection, you can’t always be 100% perfect. Perfection is Lord’s; thus its divinityship’s attribute. Importantly, just get started. Today could be one of the best days to start again for yesterday is already gone. So, don’t wait till tomorrow for it lies, somewhere, in the future which, one could say, is relatively uncertain, yet unknown, and unpredictable. When you start, at present, let you have it a the back of your mind that, as humans, we could be fallible. Couldn’t we? While failure, at some instances of life, is inevitably acceptable, one has to strive to grow — continually — every passing day.

Love: The Other Name of Humanity?

I am in love with the words that speak, highly, about positivity and discourage, diplomatically, all the discourses geared towards negativity. I’m in love with the flower that blossoms and the sun that, every morning, rises above all. I’m in love with the smile that makes men handsome and the…

I sing of the children
whose broken bones were once
like the remains of Sambisa
forest's disjointed skeleton

I sing of them
of you
& I

I sing when nobody hears me sing

I sing not only for
the dove of love
flying in the sky without
letting its wings
fall…

Children’s Day

I can't write when, on my table, there's no rice,
Maltina drinks garnished with assorted spice.
I am that boy who hustles by day and by night;
Hawking water, I think my days will be bright.

Smelling the ugly smoke of the cooking pot,
Waiting for my salty soup…

If you don't fancy reading a great deal the same way that you fancy every multicolored-flower when it finally blossoms at your backyard or at the front door of your hospitable habitation, go marry a reader or, alternatively, befriend one.😌

They, the readers in your life, will read some beautifully-written, impeccably-tailored and succinctly-put prose to you for your kind delight. Listen to the musicality of these words as they speak to you in a truly-thrilling manner that can keep you enticed-unstoppably.🤭

There's no money in reading. The reward of reading is timeless and unquantifiable!

And you, what are you reading today?
